Product Description
The unit has a special, balanced motor with full-wave electronic speed control. For use on steel, non-ferrous metals, glass, ceramics and wood (lower speed usage prevents burning of the wood). For small jobs that do not require too much power, and or time, this grinder is decent. It has the power equivalent of a dremel, and 'is' a dremel-type tool excepting for the gear pair that pivots the tool's motor pinion gear into a vertical angle, hence 'angle' grinder. However, the workmanship is poor for this class of machine. The gear pair, under moderate to heavy stress, over a year or so, will disintegrate, and cause loss of power or even worse: loss of a working tool.I originally purchased this Proxxon, because I believed its slim long neck would enable me to reach and rough out hard to reach areas I normally would have to use a chisel or my Foredom for with a long burr bit. Now, normally, I use my cherished Arbortech carver for roughing out wood, but for smaller jobs, I believed that the Proxxon would be better suited for the job due to its long purported reach. I was wrong. The Proxxon had about the same reach, and it is MUCH weaker even at its maximum rpm. Comparing my Proxxon to my Arbortech is like comparing The insurance gecko to Godzilla.At low rpm, the Proxxon vibrates like a pneumatic tool, and for delicate work on glass, or wood detail and feathering, this is disastrous. It trembles with a 'bump. bump. bump. bump' shudder that will ruin delicate projects. At higher rpm, the bump is gone, but without a thumb(the size of your foot)to use as a fulcrum(brace)your work will be ruined.Even at the highest rpm, with either the King Arthur's 'world's smallest chainsaw' or an industrial tungston carbide cutter wheel, the Proxxon WILL grab. You need to wear gloves, use both hands, AND put your project in a vice, or you may lose part of your hand. Of course, this is for tough wood. for soft wood, it is reasonably safe.The carborundum and the cut off blade that is included with this tool is like having one packet of ketchup for twenty hamburgers. You need to buy the mini-chainsaw blade(which roughs wood better than the carbide cutter, but is far more grabby and dangerous)and a carbide cutter for finer roughing(safer, and less grabby, but roughs out less)and shaping wheels like a Kutzall wheel. that is IF you must purchase this tool.(Also remember that this tool takes 2" wheels, not 4", and is cutting tools are interchangeable with Arbortech's.This tool is worth no more than $80 at the best, but unfortunately it's priced to kill you. The Arbortech is about $213, but trust me, get the Arbortech; for a few dollars more, you'd be getting a porsche instead of a bicycle(scratch that, unicycle with a pedal missing)And also, the special 'box' that makes it so easy to fit the Proxxon into without hassle...is just a cheap, soft, plastic container(one of the two plastic latches on my box has already broken off)But if you're rich, and if you have tons of small projects around the house that take very little 'cut' time, then this Proxxon might be good for you. It is very light, and fits well in your hand(when it's not trying to cut it off)and it's very convenient and mobile.One last thing. The guard plate that protects you from the grinding wheel, also stops you from getting serious work done. You may(will)be tempted to remove it, and you can, but please, wear gloves. All kidding aside, be safe. Especially with the mini-chainsaw wheel, an unseen knot in a piece of wood, may be enough for you to lose control of this tool.P.S. Although Proxxon tries to bury its warranty in paperwork, there IS a two year limited warranty on the tool. You will find it in the last pages of the manual it comes with. Good luck.

This is the second Proxxon grinder I have used. I sculpt Hawaiian koa wood and got a year and a half (approximately 40 pieces) of very hard use from the first grinder. I use the chain saw attachment for initial shaping and the various carbide attachments for finer shaping before sanding. The size and balance of the grinder is perfect for my 12" to 30" sculptures of ancient Hawaiian fish hooks. I highly recommend this grinder for wood sculpting and carving.

I BOUGHT THIS TOOL ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO, WHEN IT CAME IN I PLUGED IT IN AND IT SOUNDED AS IF THERE WAS A LOOSE GEAR (A RATLING) SO I RETURNED IT AND GOT REPLACEMENT. WHEN THE NEW ONE CAME IN IT SOUNDED THE SAME, SO I CALLED THE MFG. THEY SAID THATS THE WAY IT IS. NOW, I BUILD ALL KINDS OF THINGS IN METAL AND WOOD I ALSO TEST TOOLS FOR TOOL DESIGN COMPANIES, SO I KNOW WHT A TOOL SHOULD BE LIKE. I ONLY USED THE TOOL FOR A COMBINED TIME OF 16 HOURS OVER A 4 MONTH PERIOD. YESTERDAY IT SMOKED AND STOPED WORKING, THE MFG, WILL NOT REPLACE IT.NOW IM STUCK WITH A BROKEN TOOL AND $250.00 IN CARVING WHEELSWHEN IT WORKED, IT WORKED WELLTO BAD FOR THE MFG.
